The problem with Seamen….

I fear I’m not going to be able to start this story at the beginning of old George’s life because the journey of discovery started at his death. George Henry Hazell died in 1939 in Newport.  His death was registered as George H. Hazell in the 3rd quarter of 1939.  His age at the registration was given as 64 years, giving a birth year of 1875. George married Elizabeth Ann Comley in 1903 in Newport, Monmouthshire.  By 1911, the couple […]

The Cefn Mably Mystery

When I add a relative to my tree, I automatically attempt to collect Birth, Marriage, Death and Census info about them.  Sometimes it is unsuccessful and I hit a dead end other times the hours I put in searching for individuals is worth every minute. Recently, I added The Man’s great great grandfather’s cousin, Henry George KELLY. Henry was born in Coedkernew, Newport in 1857.  His parents were Henry KELLY and Jane Steel PARSONS.  He grew up a rather wealthy […]

More than a name

When one ventures into the murky waters of family history, one never knows what skeletons may jump out of the closet or what treasures may be uncovered. When I started my research I knew very little of my family history, I even knew little about my own grandparents.  Throughout my journey I’ve discovered more about my living relatives as well as discovering their forefathers. While I have census returns, BMD certificates and parish records, the stories of my ancestors lives […]

An update

I haven’t been posting as much as I wanted to lately, things started to catch up with me I guess. However for the remainder of 2011 and the start of 2012 I have some exciting things happening. I took the plunge last week and purchased The Next Generation (TNG) and uploaded/installed it onto Walking with Ancestors. This means I am in the process of moving my tree from Tribal Pages to this domain. I learned a lot while installing it […]

“The Land of My Fathers”

There has been talk for a while that my paternal line has a link to two important men in Welsh history.  The dates all tie in and it seems likely that this link is correct.  However, I have not personally verified the information but would like to share it anyway. On 29th August 1773, my 5x great grandfather, Evan James was born in Pencader, Carmarthenshire, however there is some uncertainty about the place of birth.  He was the son of […]

I wouldn’t change a thing…

The nature of family history research means that collaborating with others is almost a necessity.  I have used Google in the past and discovered new information about my ancestors as well as vital information about the areas they lived in and their social lives.  I love ‘meeting’ distant cousins just as much as I love finding out about my ancestors.  By finding cousins I feel I am also finding and reinforcing links to the past.  My links to the areas […]

Strength on Sunday – The Hodges

The one thing about researching the family tree that fascinates me most is that you never know what you are going to find.  Some hidden stories could be scandalous, others could be intriguing and then there are the ones that are sad and poignant. My paternal great-grandparents are Edward James Hodges and Norah Hughes. Edward was born 24th May 1898 in Fleur-de-Lis in the county of what was then Monmouthshire.  Norah was born 13th May 1901 in Lye, Worcestershire. Norah […]
